What’s On magazine, which produces six monthly titles across the Midlands, have released the list of finalists for their annual Readers’ Awards. Jay Islaam, who hosts a weekly arts and culture show on Switch Radio, is one of five names on the shortlist for the region’s leading standup comedians.

“I’m flabbergasted to be in such amazing company,” said Jay. “To be nominated for a prestigious comedy prize, along with famous household names like Greg Davies and Joe Lycett, is a huge surprise. I’ve been performing standup less than four years, so to be on the shortlist with talented comedy veterans I respect and admire so much is truly an honour. Presenting a weekly show at Switch Radio has really helped me with my comedy career, as being on air for three hours every week forces you to come up with amusing and entertaining things to say all the time.”

Jay presents the Comedy Cannon show on Switch Radio, every Friday between 4pm and 7pm, which highlights the huge amount of live music, theatre, comedy and performing arts events in the region. The programme regularly interviews members of the Midlands arts and culture community, giving them a platform to discuss and promote their work and achievements. In the last year guests have included actors, authors, musicians, comedians, playwrights, performance poets, art therapists and professional wrestlers. The show has also encouraged listeners to support local festivals and cultural events.

Jay, who hails from Washwood Heath, is already an award winner and picked up the “Best New Comedian Award” at last year’s Moseley Comedy Festival. He’s also a prolific writer and has been published by The Guardian, Birmingham Mail and Huffington Post. Earlier this month, Jay was nominated for the “Arts and Culture” trophy at the 5th Annual British Muslim Awards, in recognition of his work as a radio presenter and writer. You can listen to his Switch Radio show every Friday between 4pm and 7pm on DAB and 107.5 FM in Birmingham, or online at www.switchradio.co.uk

The full list of nominees for the “Best Midlands Comedian Award” for 2017 includes Barbara Nice, Greg Davies, Joe Lycett and Jonny Cole. You can cast your vote for Jay Islaam by visiting www.whatsonlive.co.uk/readers-awards-2017/
