Simon Friend Entertainment presents The Leeds Playhouse Production of ‘Here You Come Again,’ by Bruce Vilanch, Gabriel Barre and Tricia Paoluccio. Additional material by Jonathan Harvey. Directed by Gabriel Barre and choreographed by Lizzie Gee.
Taking us back to the dark days of the 2020 lockdown; reminding us all of the days of hoarding toilet rolls, disinfecting groceries, and masks, screens and social distancing! Plus look out for Boris!! The days when the only thing that went out more than all of us was the wheelie bin!
A beautifully produced and carefully choreographed performance with a selected cast of sheer and exuberant talent of Tricia Paolucci (Dolly), and the understudy of Kevin performed by Aidan Cutler both developed a harmonious rapport throughout; going from strength to strength!
What complements the storyline is the live band playing an instantly recognisable score of hits including Here You Come Again, Jolene, Two Doors Down, Islands in the Stream and the infamous 9 to 5 presented by musicians Jordan Li-Smith, Alex Akira Crawford, Ben Scott and Kevin Oliver Jones. The power of the music plays a key role in both the plot and the emotional landscape of the show. It underscores the theme of how art, particularly music, can be a source of healing, comfort, and connection during tough times.
A simple attic stage set crammed full of everyday clutter and adorned with all sorts of Dolly Parton paraphernalia parting at the climax with a montage of Dolly’s hits which raised the roof. The audience are warned of haze, smoke and flashing lights.
The story is a simple one celebrating the life and music of Dolly Parton. Set in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, it follows the story of Kevin, a die-hard Dolly fan whose life has taken a downward turn. As he navigates personal and professional challenges, including being stuck in quarantine, Kevin is surprised when his idol Dolly Parton herself magically appears in his life to guide him. The appearance of Dolly Parton as a magical figure in Kevin's life reflects the theme of escapism. During difficult times, people often turn to their heroes, fantasies, or comforting media to escape reality and find solace.
Through humour, heart, and a series of classic Dolly hits like ‘Jolene,’ ‘9 to 5,’ and ‘Here You Come Again,’ Dolly helps Kevin rediscover his sense of self and optimism. The musical blends nostalgia, fan devotion, and resilience, with Dolly's larger-than-life presence providing hope and inspiration to Kevin as he faces his struggles.
It leaves you in a heightened state of emotion; emotions of great sadness, happiness and feelings of having actually spent time and an evening with the great Dolly herself!
Personally I am not a Dolly Parton fan but with a cast of perfection, an evocative storyline that brings tears to your eyes this truly is a must see show! And it’s in Birmingham until Saturday!!
It really is hard to find faults with ‘Here You Come Again,’ my only criticism being I couldn’t watch it from ‘9 to 5!’
A worthy full five out five star rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
