32 storey tower planned on Broad Street

32 storey tower planned on Broad Street but is half the size of the original

Josh Horritt - Local Democracy Reporter | Monday 13th March 2023 6:48pm

A 32-storey tower could be built on Broad Street but is only half the size of the building that was originally planned. Consent was given back in 2020 for a 61-storey tower but developers, Urban Vision, said the project was undeliverable.

At 633ft the original scheme would have become Birmingham’s tallest building. Now, those wishing to purchase a penthouse apartment on Broad Street will have to settle for 32 storeys instead.

Altogether the building would consist of 294 apartments as well as shops, cafes, restaurants and businesses on the ground floor. The building will also be equipped with communal amenities, such as co-working spaces and lounges.

Urban Vision has acquired the spot on the corner of Broad Street and Ryland Street on a site currently occupied by office block Centennial House which will be demolished.

Developers say the regeneration of 100 Broad Street will bring significant economic benefits with residents spending an estimated £5m locally, supporting businesses in the area.

Nigel Robson, Director at Urban Vision, said: “Broad Street is an exciting area of Birmingham and one which has seen significant planned growth in recent years, with more to come.

“Our ambition is to deliver one of the city’s most sustainable developments at 100 Broad Street, which sets the standard for tall buildings in Birmingham. As an underutilised brownfield site, this is an opportunity to support the wider regeneration of the area – driving local growth and creating jobs.

“Our proposals are deliverable and, should planning permission be granted, construction will begin as soon as possible. Indeed, the site has historically benefited from planning consent for a 61-storey building although this proposal was found to be undeliverable.”

“We are now proposing a smaller building but one which is clearly deliverable and can set a new standard for tall buildings in Birmingham. It includes exciting ground-floor retail, outdoor amenities and communal space.”

The developers are now inviting the general public to visit their online consultation to give feedback on the planned tower block.
