The medals, ribbon and medal boxes have been designed by a group of young designers from Birmingham’s School of Jewellery. On Wednesday, the designers will travel down the canal, one of their sources of inspiration for the design. They will travel past Arena Birmingham, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games venue for gymnastics, before arriving at the Roundhouse.
They will disembark at the back of the Roundhouse, and then walk from the canal towpath to the front of the Roundhouse, where several athletes will be gathered to see the medals for the very first time.
One of the athletes waiting for the medals to arrive will be Hannah Cockroft who is a seven-time Paralympic Champion and who has 11 World Championship (IPC) gold medals. In fact, the only medal that is missing from Hannah’s extensive collection is a Commonwealth Games medal, as Birmingham 2022 is the first time since Hannah became an international athlete that one of her events has featured at the major multi-sport event.
The following people connected with the commonwealth games will be attending the event:
Amber (team leader), Francesca and Catarina – students from Birmingham’s School of Jewellery who won a competition for their designs of the medal, ribbon and the box
Hannah Cockroft, seven-time Paralympic Champion
Nathan Maguire, Paralympian and Team England wheelchair athlete at Gold Coast 2018
Oscar Kelly, the current British PTVI champion who claimed silver on his international debut at a World Triathlon Para Cup last year
Charlie Harding, Penrith (Oscar’s Guide), started guiding Oscar in 2021 including to a sixth-place finish at World Triathlon Para Championships Abu Dhabi.
