Breakin’ Convention
Birmingham Hippodrome
Hurst Street
Birmingham
13th - 14th June 2023
Act I - 45 minutes
Interval - 30 minutes
Act II - 45 minutes

Breakin’ Convention is based at and supported by Sadler’s Wells. It represents the origins and evolution of hip hop culture from around the world and around the corner.
A U.K. tour and celebrating its 20 year tour this year in style with an array of talent from our local region and reaching out across the world!
A hot summer evening and I was absolutely blown away by the sheer talent, passion and enthusiasm of all the acts at the Breakin’ Convention. What a buzz and vibe throughout the whole theatre with a range of activities being hosted in different parts of the theatre, pre-show and during the interval. The lower ground foyer hosted by DJ Jambu engaged and entertained a mass and was spectacular to see and a vocal zone in the entrance hall to name but a few.
The main stage event was hosted by Jonzi D, an MC, dancer and spoken word artist accompanied by a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter.
An event that displayed a diverse range of talent, culture, age and performed with passion and vigour throughout; the energy was electrifying!! The audience loved it!
I highly recommend this event and special mention must go to Mover (South Korea) in Act I, showcasing the very best of breaking in Merry-Go-Round and live beatboxing. In Act II Yvonne Smink (Netherlands) who brought her hip hop infused take on pole dancing to the U.K. with an under style act. Both acts were superbly choreographed and performed with evocative lighting to create an atmospheric mood!
Two words to describe the event - absolutely astounding!
Jonzi D shared his passion for the event and ended with two heartfelt quotes:
‘It’s not who you are. It’s where you’re at.’
‘Peace and love, peace and love!’
A completely different style of show to what I normally cover, but please support it as you will not be disappointed. The only criticism I have is that it is only a two night event.
Breakin’ Convention is a definite and a strong 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you to Birmingham Hippodrome for sharing and hosting such an amazing and awesome event!
