Joseph and The Technicolour Dreamcoat Review

Scott Morgan at The Hippodrome, Birmingham

Now let's be honest, has there ever really been a bad musical from the incredible Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice? Of course the answer is no so I already knew I was in for a fantastic show before it had even started.  Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has been delighting audiences for over 50 years now with multiple West End revivals and UK tours. This latest production is directed by Laurence Connor and made the show feel as fresh as ever.

The musical is based on the biblical story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis. It follows Joseph, the favourite son of Jacob, who is gifted a multicoloured coat. His jealous brothers sell him into slavery, but Joseph's gift of interpreting dreams helps him rise to power in Egypt, ultimately leading to a reunion with his family. It's been years since I have seen a cast this incredible in a brilliant family production. They had me  into the story right away with the catchy and upbeat songs.

Birmingham's very own comic and panto legend, Matt Slack took on the role of Pharaoh and absolutely smashed it. He's only playing the Birmingham shows too! Adam Filipe played the lead role of the charming Joseph and for me completely stole the show. He's charm, voice and stage presents really was show stopping. Christina Bianco took on the famous narrator role and was also an absolute standout. She brought the story to life with warmth and a sharp sense of humour. The whole cast were fantastic and brought this production to life.

Overall the show is incredibly heartwarming, entertaining and an absolute joy from start to finish. From the impressive costumes and stunning effects to the all-singing, all dancing musical numbers the show is certainly be a family favourite
