New KFC store officially coming to Acocks Green after permission granted

A new KFC branch in Acocks Green has been given the green light by Birmingham City Council. The fried chicken brand will replace a former Co-op travel agent on Warwick Road.

Inside the branch will be space for ten customers to sit and eat their food with a separate collection point for delivery drivers. 30 staff are expected to be employed at the KFC which will be open between 10am and 11pm, Monday to Sunday.

The site used to be a Co-op travel agent close to the junction of Mallard Close but has been empty since 2021. Found within the Acocks Green District Centre, the KFC will be surrounded by retail shops, a Wetherspoons, Morrisons supermarket and the Sacred Heart and Holy Souls Church.

The application drew some criticism from locals when it was submitted back in March 2023. Eight letters of objection were sent to the council objecting to unhealthy food options in the local centre as well as the potential for litter problems.

No additional parking is included in the plans. A representative for KFC has said the new store would bring a vacant unit back into use and ‘increase the vitality’ of the area.

In its planning documents, Birmingham City Council agreed: “The proposed shopfront, new entrance door and the replacement external tiles would enhance and modernise the appearance of the vacant unit. It would bring a vacant unit into use and subsequently contribute positively towards the vitality and viability of this centre.”
