SWITCH Radio is asking local residents to share their own local news stories in a bid to deliver centralised community news.

The award-winning radio station is currently in collaboration with the Public Interest News Foundation to examine the impact of  local news on local voting patterns. The station has sought to deliver 'hyper' local news since January 2021 as part of the project, and are now inviting local residents to participate in the project too.

A specific page on the homepage has been set up called 'Submit a News Story.' This space is where residents can share issues, news or relevant experiences they want the station to highlight, along with optional contact details (https://www.switchradio.co.uk/submit-a-story).

Recent station articles have included a local spring clean and litter drive, a celebratory cream tea for women and a profile with a local election candidate. Alternate article ideas could include school, work or community events, personal triumphs or achievements or cultural events in Castle Vale.

Dean Kavanagh, Station Manager at Switch Radio said, “Reliable and independent local news is vital to developing healthy communities. We’re delighted to be working with PINF on this project, and we’re looking forward to working alongside the local community to deliver something we’re really passionate about - local news that matters.”

The Neal and Dominique Gandhi Foundation has backed the PINF to launch the Impact Fund to examine the relationship between news and democracy in local wards.

Switch Radio is Birmingham's local community radio station, made in, for and by Birmingham, seeing the community at the heart of everything.
