Switch Radio wins Kings Award for Voluntary Service

The Kings Award for Voluntary Service is the highest accolade for Community Groups, equivalent to an MBE

Dean Kavanagh | 30th April 2025

Switch Radio, a community radio station based in Castle Vale, Birmingham, has been awarded The King's Award for Voluntary Service, the highest accolade for volunteer groups in the UK. This prestigious award, equivalent to an MBE, recognises the station's exceptional contribution to the local community through its volunteer-led initiatives.

The King's Award for Voluntary Service was created in 2002 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and was renamed following the accession of King Charles III. It is awarded annually to groups that demonstrate outstanding voluntary work in their communities.

Founded in 2010, Switch Radio has been a vital part of the Birmingham community, broadcasting on 107.5 FM, DAB, and online. The station provides a platform for local news, music, and voices, with a team of dedicated volunteers who are passionate about serving their community. The station's roots go back to 1995 when Vale FM was formed by residents of the Castle Vale estate. Over the years, Switch Radio has grown to serve a wider area, including Minworth, Castle Bromwich, Bromford, and beyond.

Dean Kavanagh, Station Manager of Switch Radio, said: "It's a real honour to receive this award, which is down to the hard work, sweat, and tears of our tireless volunteers. It's also a great opportunity to thank our local community, who continue to support our work, which is making a real difference to local people."

Stephen Higgs, Head of Programming, added: "I'm absolutely thrilled that Switch Radio and its incredible volunteers have been honoured with the King's Award for Voluntary Service, a testament to their unwavering dedication and passion towards the community we represent."

As recipients of The King's Award for Voluntary Service, Switch Radio received a certificate signed by the King and a domed glass crystal. This was awarded to the station at a ceremony at the ICC.
