A COMMUNITY Eco Hub welcomed families to Witton Lakes at the launch of their environmentally focussed facility last Friday.
More than £1million was invested to transform a former Park Keeper's cottage into an Eco facility to deliver practical learning and action on sustainability and the environment.
Families attended on Friday 29th April and enjoyed activities including archery, sprint races, table tennis and bike rides around the lake. Giant Connect 4, football and tours of the hub were also popular, along with the live music by resident DJ Gaz H.
The multi-service facility aims to educate visitors on sustainable living, offer employment and volunteering opportunities and wellbeing activities through the wider use of Witton Lakes, the Park and open spaces.
And there will be a push to encourage people to grow their own food and reduce fuel costs, uniting people from all backgrounds by sharing physical and growing spaces, including a new community cafe and supporting schools to increase their environmental knowledge.
The project used natural materials where possible in the construction of a well insulated, low energy building powered by renewable energy sources. Materials chosen to reduce carbon emissions were: woodfibre insulation, clay clockwork and timber frames on walls, floors and to reduce concrete usage.
Triple glazed high performance windows, Air Source heat pumps to provide heating and hot water and photovoltaic panels to reduce electricity usage were also used to create the environmentally friendly building.
The following stakeholders have actively supported the new Witton Lakes Eco Hub: National Lottery Community Fund, Birmingham City Council, IM Properties, Friends of Witton Lakes and the local community.
